Remediation & Development of RAF St Athan

PB has enabled the Welsh Assembly Government to regenerate a former 405 hectare RAF base and go on to successfully promote the site for the £11bn Metrix development - Wales' most valuable development programme to date.

Nearly 70 years of operations on the site had left behind various forms of contamination, including radioactive materials. When remediation work has been completed, the site will accommodate the Welsh Assembly Government's aerospace park development, DARA's large aircraft operations and provide a significant proportion of the MoD's defence training rationalisation programme, which aims to deliver tri-service training for the armed forces in one location through the Metrix consortium.

In this landmark project, PB brought together environmental, development infrastructure and aviation expertise. The team provided site investigation and remediation services, runway extension and aircraft turning circle designs, as well as full site services assessments, earthworks and energy solutions, drainage strategies and unexploded ordnance surveys.
